Funerals, Memorials & Grief Counseling Print E-mail

Death is a difficult time for everyone and we at the Cathedral grieve with you. We also look forward to eternal life when one day, we will all be together with Jesus Christ.
Please contact the church office as soon as possible when a member has died to allow for consultation with the clergy and for the scheduling of the funeral service. Pastoral support is available to all members of the congregation and to their families. Funeral services are often followed by either a reception in the commons area with bars, mints and nuts, and coffee or tea, or by a light lunch served by members of the congregation.
We celebrate the Burial Rite as found in The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) and regarding the service, as noted in the BCP, page 570:

The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised.
The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that "neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn.
