Choir Processing After the service

The choir season begins the Sunday after Labor Day and extends to the last Sunday in May.  During that time the choir provides musical leadership for each 10 AM Sunday Service, the two Christmas Eve Services, the Maundy Thursday Service, the Good Friday evening Service and the Easter morning service by leading the hymns and service music and by singing an Offertory and a Eucharist anthem.  The choir frequently provides music for Ordinations and Installations of clergy.

During the season of Advent, the Cathedral Choir combines musical forces with the Dakota Quartet of the South Dakota Symphony to perform a special evening service of Advent Lessons and Music.  This traditional and inspirational Anglican service has become a way for many members of Calvary as well as members of the community at large to celebrate the beginning of the season of Advent.

If you feel that you would like to sing with us, do not hesitate to join. The members of the choir are highly supportive of each other. Section leaders and long time choir members bolster and encourage new-comers as they learn and perform the music and become part of the choir family.  Additionally, the choir is quite social.  Parties and having fun is a staple of the choir experience.   Lifelong friendships have been made in the Cathedral Choir.  Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9 PM and Sunday mornings from 9 AM to 9:40 AM.

The choir repertoire varies greatly in style and stylistic period, and music from the renaissance to the 21st century is performed.  The majority of the anthems are from the late 20th and early 21st centuries.   Most of the music is accompanied by piano or organ, some pieces are performed a capella, and occasionally instruments such as flute, saxophone, oboe, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and strings are used to accompany anthems.  Also, these instruments are used occasionally for special solo presentations.

During the summer when the Cathedral Choir is not in session, individual choir members and other members of the congregation provide special music for the Sunday services.  These musical offerings include both vocal and instrumental solos in a wide variety of musical styles.  Anyone desiring to provide special music during the summer is invited to do so.

The Cathedral Choir is directed by Dr. Monty Barnard. The rehearsal accompanist is Diane Van Den Oever, the Cathedral's principal organist.
